AS Live - Production (created) content

For our production, I was in the Graphics team with Sydney and our first task was to develop a style guide. This style guide is important to every aspect of the show, as not only will it give us colors for our characters, but also the fonts and logo ideas that we are going for with the show.

This initial style bible wasn't discussed with the rest of the production team (including the producers).

Myself and Sydney first came up with the color scheme for the logo, through basing it off of the original logo we were given, we decided on gold for our logo color. While we could have gone for orange like the logo was n the beginning, we decided to go for gold as that was a more common color during the Medieval times (in the world the game show is set).

The next task we set ourselves was deciding on the color scheme for the show itself - the sets and characters. For the set design, we decided on mute yet realistic colors for all three sets, just so it would make sure that the characters would stand out more as they would have brighter colors.

For the forest set design, we decided to keep it simple and make the color scheme a mix of dark and light green, brown and light blue. This was because, although it was a comedy Fantasy game show, we didn't want to make the sets look unrealistic in their color, so we went for the colors we need would work as, those are the colors forests normally are.

For the cave setting, we, again, went for something simple and fitting for the realism of the show. Grey. However, we also wanted to incorporate very washed shades of green and purple/brown, just so it would give the cave a look of it being  3D set, rather than a 2D one. We also kept the colors simple as we didn't want any of the chosen colors to clash with the dragons coloring, nor the contestants or Malaghast.

After deciding on our color scheme for the sets, we came up with our color scheme for the characters. The first character we decided to pick a color scheme for, was Malaghast. I suggested we go for purple and gold as high ranking people or royalty often wore dyed clothes in Medieval Times, and purple and gold often represent royalty or high ranking, perfect for Malaghast being one of the main focuses (as we needed him to stand out) and, or being a wizard he is also a high ranking. We also chose blue as his 'magic' color as we wanted to have something that showed him as, almost being neutral, we didn't want a dark color as that would represent Evil, and we didn't want a bright color as that would represent him being 'Good'.

We then moved onto the troll. After looking at pictures from Face Off (a SFX prosthetics competition show) as well as video game and artistic depictions of trolls, we went for the color scheme of the skin being a dark green, we decided on this color as the troll's section would take place in a forest, and that way she would seem to blend into the environment, this is also the same reason we picked brown. We picked red for the clothing as Sara (one of our producers) mentioned having ‘complimentary’ colors for the Troll, this is why we looked at the muted burned red.

However, in a later meeting, the producers weren't sure of the red, so we changed it to a deeper maroon color.

For the barman, we went back and forth on his costume as we didn't know whether he was Irish or Scottish, and his costume would depend on his nationality. After asking our producers, we were told he was Scottish, so we decided on using black and green for a tartan inspired costume (left) as that is similar to what the Scottish wore back then. For the hair we went for ginger (this was before we found out the barman's actual nationality and we didn't change it), we knew this would be a comedy Fantasy show, so we decided to play into the stereotype that all Irish people have ginger hair.

This changed when we got to our final style bible. In our meetings, the producers wanted a more leather apron styled look so we changed the tartan inspired costume colors to a single block color of brown. We also changed the hair to a darker shade of ginger.

For the dragon, we came up with two color schemes. Our first idea was having the dragon be red with light-ish gold scales and claws with yellow wings and eyes and the producers wanted this colored dragon. However, we also came up with a color scheme for a blue, silver and white dragon, we chose this as an idea for color, as not only is it not the typical depiction for a dragon, it would possibly allow for a more interesting lighting and set design as the dragon itself would have the color scheme of crystals.

However after talking with the producers, they were set on having a red dragon and also wanted the shade of red we had used to be slightly darker and more shadowed.
