Year 3 - Character profiles and development
Characters
For
my characters, I decided to have character whose
personalities are similar, but also different, so, here as to character s could
both be introverted, one could also be very prideful and determined, while
another could be quite stubborn and stern if she needs to be. This makes sure
that the characters aren’t all 2-D clones of each other and have dynamic in
the personalities that make them relatable to the audience. After all, if
your characters don’t feel relatable, then audiences may not stick with them as
they have nothing to relate or hold onto.
Aoife:
For Aoife, the ‘main’ protagonist, I wanted to give her quite a strong introduction luring the audience into believing that she is the main character, when in reality, she is taken from the picture very quickly and reintroduced to the audience as the main antagonist of the first season.
My inspiration for Aoife, as Cynder from the Legend of Spyro and Daenerys from Game of Thrones. I chose Cynder or her story, and how she was kidnapped and then corrupted into her evil form before being reverted back. However, in TLoS, Cynder is not the main character so her connection to the audience didn’t exist until the third game, whereas, Aoife is the main character of her story, making her connection with the audience more developed. I had Daenerys in mind as inspiration as, throughout Game of Thrones, she was very kind and inspiring to those who were close to her, but she actually fell into ‘Targaryen Madness’, which caused her to go mad and unleash destruction and chaos onto everything around her.
With Aoife, I already knew her evil side as going to be the
opposite of her good personality, so I eventually decided on having Aoife’s
evil side a possession, wherein just the wrong moment, Aoife could instantly close
control and fall into her ‘darkness’, making her very violent and very
difficult to reign back in.
It could also be more for the audience, as it would be not only Aoife bouncing back and forth between good and being evil, but also the audience’s feeling toward’s Aoife going back and forth, something which isn’t seem much.
I decided to do this as it creates a different character for Aoife, she is introduced as the hero, but is quickly taken away and is then shown to the audience as the evil character, before being brought back to a good character right at the end of the last season. Normally ith heroes and/or protagonists you expect to build a deep relationship with the character throughout all their time on-screen.
However, with Aoife’s character, I wanted to create the feeling of being loved, to being hated, and then having to try to reintegrate herself back into the world, she was once loved in it also creates that or the audience, watching a character they briefly loved, become evil, and then trying to build that relationship back from the burnt cinders of her past.
I thought this was interesting as you don’t see this done with
many (of any) main characters in TV/films now. I also wanted to make it clear
to the audience that no one is safe. Once again, this is different from what is
normally seen, but it also makes the audience feel on-edge, not knowing what
could happen next, and who it could happen to.
Kato Yua:
For Kato Yua, the actual main protagonist of the series, I wanted to give her a similar introduction with Aoife, although, in the script itself, I gave her more lines and shifted more of the later focus of the script onto her. This is so the audience has someone to connect to and stay with throughout the series.
My inspiration for Yua came from a real person, Mike Shinoda, a
famous American-Japanese singer/rapper and producer. I chose Mike as her
inspiration because of Mike’s personality.
While Mike can be quite fun and joyful to be around, Mike can be prideful
in his work, as well as very confident (but not cocky). He is also very
empathic and kind-hearted. I chose to give Yua this type of personality as it
helps contrast Aoife’s more broken and damaged personality, with her more
joyful and confident one.
It also shows us that Yua is a confident woman and will be anything to protect the ones she loves, including Aoife, as even though she is broken, she isn’t lost, and Yua isn’t one to leave others alone to fall apart, much like Mike.
I decided to make Kato
Yua (as well as the other three
characters below) more ‘normal’ in
regards to audience relatability. This is because the audience would have some familiarity and a
group of characters to hold onto.
Aria:
Aria is one of the secondary protagonists of the series. She is polite, smart, well-spoken, but very timid and introverted, often listening. When she does speak, she is incredibly prideful, determined, quick-witted, and sharp.
The inspiration behind this character as myself, and who I wish I could be. While I am very introverted and quiet, if there’s something I’m passionate about, I’ll throw 110% into it and be determined sure it’s what I want it to be. I decided to put myself into this as I wanted a character ho as a different personality to the other girls, creating a dynamic between them. I wanted to make Aria someone who is shy and introverted, choosing to listen rather than speak. However, she would speak up if needed to and is incredibly loyal to her sisters.
Jang A-Yeong:
Like Aria, she is another secondary protagonist.
The inspiration for her is Chang Seungyeon, a singer and dancer of
the Kpop group, CLC. A-Yeong is outgoing and known as the ‘energy pill’ of the
group, brightening their moods or being a support pillar. Although she is the
youngest, she is incredibly mature for her age. She’s not afraid to speak her
mind and not afraid to put herself in harm’s way to
protect her sisters.
Development:
One of the most important things, in my opinion, to a TV series, is the characters. Your show could look and sound amazing, but if your characters are cliche / one-dimensional cutouts then there isn't much for the audience to hold onto. This is y I've developed my characters to feel like real characters.
